Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use basic punctuation marks in sentences.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Legos or any building blocks
  • Video game controller (pretend play)

No prior knowledge or materials are required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Punctuation Lego Tower
  • Build a Lego tower with different colored blocks. Assign each color to a specific punctuation mark (e.g., red for period, blue for question mark). Take turns with your student adding a block to the tower while saying a sentence that requires that specific punctuation mark. For example, if the tower has a red block (period), the student can say, "I like to play video games." Encourage them to use the correct punctuation mark in their sentences.

  • Activity 2: Video Game Dialogue
  • Pretend to play a video game with your student. Create a dialogue between two characters in the game. Write down the dialogue on paper, leaving out the punctuation marks. Together, read the dialogue and discuss where the punctuation marks should be placed. Let your student take turns adding the correct punctuation marks to the dialogue.
