Objective
By the end of this lesson, J will be able to identify different sounds made by letters, recognize how letters come together to form words, and understand the concept of making sounds with letters. J will also enjoy the process of learning through fun activities!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- A quiet space for activities
- A comfortable spot for reading aloud
Before the lesson, make sure to have a quiet space set up where J can focus on the activities without distractions. It's also helpful to have a few simple words in mind that J can practice with.
Activities
-
Sound Hunt: Go on a sound hunt around the house! J can listen for different sounds that letters make. For example, "B" for "buzz" like a bee or "S" for "sizzle" like bacon. J can write down or draw pictures of the things they find that start with those sounds.
-
Letter Art: Using crayons or markers, J can create a big poster with the letters of the alphabet. For each letter, J can draw a picture of something that starts with that letter, like "A" for apple and "C" for cat. This activity helps J connect letters with sounds and words!
-
Sound Clapping: Play a fun game where J claps their hands for each sound they hear in a word. For example, in the word "cat," J will clap three times (one for each sound: /k/, /a/, /t/). This helps J break down words into their individual sounds!
Talking Points
- "Do you hear that sound? What letter do you think makes that sound?"
- "Let's look at the letter 'A'. What words can we think of that start with 'A'? Can you say them out loud?"
- "When we clap for sounds, it helps us hear how many sounds are in a word. Can you clap for the sounds in 'dog'?"
- "Drawing letters and pictures is so much fun! What letter do you want to start with?"
- "Every letter has its own special sound. Can you make the sound for the letter 'B'? Buzz like a bee!"
