Objective
By the end of this lesson, J will explore the world of poetry by reading and creating poems centered around a specific theme or emotion. J will learn to express feelings through words and understand how poems can paint pictures in our minds.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Examples of simple poems (original or classic)
- Theme or emotion cards (e.g., happiness, sadness, nature)
- A comfortable reading space
Before the lesson, prepare a few simple poems that J can read. Create cards with different themes or emotions written on them to help J choose what to focus on.
Activities
-
Poem Reading:
Start the lesson by reading a few poems together. Ask J which poem they liked the best and why. Discuss the feelings or images that the poems create.
-
Theme Selection:
Using the theme or emotion cards, let J choose one that resonates with them. This will be the focus for their own poem creation.
-
Poem Creation:
Encourage J to create their own poem based on the chosen theme or emotion. They can draw pictures to go along with their poem, making it a fun and creative experience.
-
Sharing Time:
Have J share their poem with you. They can read it aloud and show the pictures they drew. Celebrate their creativity with applause and encouragement!

- "How do you think this poem makes someone feel? Can you feel that too?"
- "What theme did you choose? Why does it matter to you?"
- "Can you think of a picture that goes with your poem? What colors will you use?"
- "How does it feel to share your poem? Do you like reading your words out loud?"
