Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and create simple words using natural materials found in the outdoor environment, fostering both reading skills and creativity.
Materials and Prep
- Rocks of various sizes
- Craft supplies (like sticks, leaves, and mud)
- Outdoor mud kitchen
- Pens or markers (if available, or use sticks to write in the mud)
Before the lesson, gather all materials and ensure the outdoor area is safe and clean for play. Prepare to encourage the student to explore and use their imagination!
Activities
-
Rock Letter Hunt:
Hide rocks around the outdoor area. On each rock, write a letter (or draw a picture representing a letter). Have the student find the rocks and say the letter out loud. This will help them recognize letters and sounds.
-
Word Building with Mud:
Using mud and sticks, encourage the student to shape letters or simple words. For example, they can mold the word "mud" or "fun." This tactile activity helps reinforce letter shapes and spelling.
-
Crafty Story Time:
Using the craft supplies, have the student create a scene or character from their favorite story. After creating, ask them to tell you a story about their creation, focusing on using simple words and sentences.
Talking Points
- "Can you find the letter 'A' on one of the rocks? What sound does it make?"
- "Let's make the word 'mud' with our hands! Can you show me how to shape the letters?"
- "What story can we make with the things you created? Tell me all about it!"
- "How many words can we make using the letters we found? Let's count them!"
- "Every time you find a letter, it’s like finding a treasure! What treasure did you find today?"
