Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and read simple sight words using fun outdoor activities, enhancing their reading skills while enjoying nature.
Materials and Prep
- Outdoor mud kitchen
- Swing
- Trampoline
- Sticks or stones for writing (optional)
Before the lesson, prepare a list of simple sight words (like "mud," "play," "jump," "fun") and ensure the outdoor area is safe and ready for play.
Activities
-
Mud Kitchen Word Creation
In the mud kitchen, the student will use sticks or stones to write out sight words in the mud. Encourage them to say each word aloud as they write it.
-
Swing and Read
While swinging, the student can hold up flashcards (or you can write sight words in the mud) and read them out loud. This combines movement with learning!
-
Trampoline Word Jump
On the trampoline, call out a sight word and have the student jump each time they say the word. This helps them associate movement with reading.
Talking Points
- "Look at the mud! Can you write the word 'mud' in it?"
- "What does the word 'play' mean? Can you show me how to play?"
- "When you swing, say the word 'jump'! Can you jump high while you say it?"
- "Let's jump on the trampoline and say 'fun' together! Ready? One, two, three, FUN!"
- "Every time we read a word, we get smarter! Can you tell me what the word 'read' means?"
