Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jade will be able to add numbers together up to 50 using simple addition strategies and understand the concept of combining quantities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayon
- Small objects (like buttons, stones, or toys) for counting
Before the lesson, make sure to gather small objects that Jade can use for counting. It’s also helpful to have a quiet space for focused learning.
Activities
-
Counting with Objects:
Jade will use small objects to practice counting and creating groups. For example, she can group 5 buttons and then add 3 more to see how many she has in total.
-
Addition Stories:
Create fun stories together where characters need to combine items. For instance, "If a cat has 2 fish and finds 4 more, how many fish does the cat have now?"
-
Draw and Add:
Jade will draw pictures of items and write simple addition problems next to them. For example, she can draw 3 apples and 2 oranges and write "3 + 2 = ?".
-
Number Line Hop:
Create a number line on the floor with tape. Jade can hop from one number to another to visualize addition. For example, if she hops from 4 to 6, she can see that 4 + 2 = 6.
Talking Points
- "When we add, we are putting things together! Can you show me how to put 3 and 2 together?"
- "Look at these buttons! If I have 4 buttons and I get 1 more, how many do I have now?"
- "Adding is like counting up! If we start at 5 and add 3, we can count 6, 7, 8!"
- "Every time we add, we make a bigger number. Can you guess what 10 + 5 is?"
- "Let’s make a fun story! If a dog has 2 bones and finds 3 more, how many bones does the dog have in total?"
