Objective
By the end of this 30-week lesson plan, Georgiana will have a deeper understanding of nature, including the sky, earth, and living creatures. She will learn to observe and document her findings in a nature journal and explore the relationship between art and nature by studying various artists. This comprehensive approach will enhance her appreciation for the environment and improve her observational skills.
Materials and Prep
- Nature journal (notebook)
- Pencils and colored pencils or markers
- Books about nature, weather, and naturalists
- Access to outdoor spaces (parks, gardens, etc.)
- Basic science experiment materials (water, soil, small rocks)
- Art supplies (paper, paint, brushes, etc.)
Before starting, familiarize yourself with the local environment and weather patterns. Choose books that are age-appropriate and engaging for Georgiana. Prepare a schedule that allows for both outdoor exploration and indoor study.
Activities
-
Nature Walks: Take regular walks in different local environments (parks, forests, beaches) to observe and record various elements of nature. Georgiana can sketch plants, animals, and landscapes in her journal.
-
Weather Observations: Keep track of daily weather conditions, including temperature, cloud cover, and precipitation. Create a weather chart in her journal and discuss how it affects local wildlife and plant life.
-
Soil Experiments: Collect samples of soil from different locations and examine them for texture, color, and composition. Discuss the importance of soil for plant growth and how it supports ecosystems.
-
Art Inspired by Nature: Study artists who focus on nature, such as Claude Monet or Georgia O'Keeffe. Create artwork inspired by observations from nature walks, using various mediums.
-
Creature Homes: Research different habitats and the animals that live there. Create a diorama or drawing of a chosen habitat, showcasing the creatures that inhabit it.
Talking Points

- "Have you ever thought about how weather affects what we see outside? What changes do you notice?"
- "Every season brings something new. What’s your favorite season and why?"
- "Nature is all around us, and it can teach us a lot. What’s one thing you’ve learned that surprised you?"
