Objective
By the end of this lesson, Maisie will be able to identify different Australian coins, understand their values, and perform basic math operations such as addition and subtraction using the coins. She will also learn about the significance of these coins in everyday transactions.
Materials and Prep
- Real Australian coins (1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2)
- Paper and pencil for note-taking
- Calculator (optional, for checking answers)
Before the lesson, ensure that you have a variety of coins available for hands-on activities. Familiarize yourself with the values and features of each coin to guide Maisie effectively.
Activities
-
Coin Identification Game
Start by laying out all the different Australian coins. Ask Maisie to identify each coin and state its value. Once she is comfortable, mix the coins and have her identify them again as quickly as possible. This will help reinforce her knowledge of the coins.
-
Coin Counting Challenge
Give Maisie a specific amount of money, such as $5.00, and challenge her to create that amount using different combinations of coins. This will help her practice addition and understand how different coins can make up larger values.
-
Shopping Simulation
Create a mini shopping experience where you set prices for various items (e.g., toys, snacks, etc.). Have Maisie "buy" items using her coins, requiring her to calculate the total cost and determine the change she should receive. This will make math practical and fun.
-
Coin Art
Using the coins, have Maisie create a fun design or picture on paper. Afterward, she can count the total value of the coins used in her artwork, combining creativity with math.
Talking Points
- "Can you tell me what this coin is called and how much it’s worth?"
- "Let’s see how many different ways we can make $5.00 using these coins!"
- "When you buy something, how do you know if you have enough money?"
- "What do you think is the most useful coin? Why?"
- "How do you feel about using coins instead of notes? Is it easier or harder?"
- "Can you think of a time when you had to use coins to buy something?"
- "What’s the highest value coin you have? How many smaller coins could we use to make the same amount?"
- "Why do you think we have different coins? How does that help us?"
- "What kind of things do you usually buy with coins?"
- "How would you explain to a friend why it’s important to know about money?"
