Objective
By the end of this lesson, Terrance will be able to recognize and produce the sounds of different letters, helping him to build a strong foundation for reading and writing.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- A comfortable space to sit and work
Before the lesson, make sure Terrance is in a quiet place where he can focus. Prepare the crayons or markers for drawing activities.
Activities
-
Letter Sound Song:
Start the lesson by singing a fun song about letter sounds. You can make up your own tune or use a familiar melody, like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." For example, sing "A says 'ah', B says 'buh', C says 'kuh', let's learn them all together!"
-
Sound Scavenger Hunt:
Go on a scavenger hunt around the house to find items that start with different letter sounds. For instance, look for a 'b' for ball, 'c' for cat, etc. Each time you find an item, say the letter and its sound together!
-
Draw and Sound:
Have Terrance draw pictures of things that start with specific letters. For example, ask him to draw an apple for 'A' and then say, "What sound does 'A' make?" Encourage him to say the sound out loud!
-
Letter Sound Charades:
Play a game of charades where Terrance acts out an object that starts with a letter sound, and you guess what it is. For example, if he acts like a dog, say, "What sound does 'D' make?"
Talking Points
- "Can you tell me what sound the letter 'A' makes?"
- "Great job! Let's find something that starts with 'B'. What do you think it could be?"
- "When we draw pictures, we can say the sound of the letter. What sound does 'C' make?"
- "Can you show me how to act like a 'D' word? What could it be?"
- "Remember, every letter has its own special sound. Let's practice them together!"
