Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to count from 1 to 10 confidently and recognize the numbers through fun and engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are needed, just your imagination and enthusiasm!
- Be prepared to use your fingers and objects around the house for counting.
- Know the numbers 1 to 10 and be ready to help the student recognize them.
Activities
-
Finger Counting: Start by using your fingers to count from 1 to 10. Show the student how to hold up one finger for 1, two fingers for 2, and so on. This helps them visualize the numbers with their own hands!
-
Counting Objects: Look around the house for small objects (like toys, blocks, or even snacks!). Count them together, pointing to each item as you say the number. For example, "Let's count these 3 blocks together!"
-
Number Dance: Create a fun dance where you call out a number and the student has to jump or clap that many times. For example, say "Jump 4 times!" and count together as they dance!
-
Number Storytime: Make up a short story that includes counting. For example, "Once there were 5 little ducks, and they went out to play. Then they met 3 more ducks!" Count the ducks together as you tell the story.
Talking Points
- "Counting is like a game! Can you count with me?"
- "Look at your fingers! Each one is a number. How many fingers do you have?"
- "Let’s find some toys and count them together! How many do we have?"
- "When I say a number, you can jump that many times! Ready? Jump 2 times!"
- "Stories can have numbers too! Let’s count the characters in our story!"
