Objective

By the end of this lesson, Fiona will understand the basics of managing money, including how to calculate wages, overtime, and the importance of budgeting for bills and money transfers. She will also learn practical skills that will help her in real-life financial situations.

Materials and Prep

  • Calculator
  • Paper and pen/pencil for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for online banking simulation (if possible)
  • Sample bills (can be created for the lesson)
  • Worksheet for wage calculations and overtime

Before the lesson, ensure that Fiona understands basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) as these will be used throughout the activities.

Activities

  • Wage Calculation Game: Create a fictional job scenario for Fiona where she must calculate her weekly wages based on different hourly rates and hours worked. For instance, if she works 20 hours at $15/hour, how much does she earn? This activity will help her practice multiplication and understand how wages are determined.

  • Overtime Challenge: Introduce the concept of overtime pay. Provide different scenarios where Fiona has to calculate her earnings for regular hours and overtime hours (e.g., time and a half). This will help her understand how overtime affects total earnings.

  • Budgeting for Bills: Create a mock monthly budget where Fiona has to allocate her earnings to different bills (like rent, utilities, and groceries). She will learn how to prioritize spending and save for unexpected expenses.

  • Money Transfer Simulation: Discuss how money transfers work, including bank transfers and using online banking. If possible, simulate a transfer using a fictional bank account to give Fiona a practical understanding of managing her finances.
