Objective
By the end of this lesson, Phoenix will understand the basic concepts of elections, including what they are, how they work, and why they are important for making decisions in a community. Phoenix will also learn about the roles of voters and candidates in the election process.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- A whiteboard or large piece of paper for brainstorming
- Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
- Time to discuss current events related to elections (optional)
Before the lesson, it may be helpful to have a basic understanding of what a democracy is and how decisions are made in a community. This will provide a foundation for discussing elections.
Activities
-
Election Day Role Play: Phoenix can pretend to be a voter and a candidate. Create a simple scenario where Phoenix can campaign for a made-up position (like "Class President"). Phoenix can create posters and give a short speech about why they would make a great leader.
-
Voting Simulation: Set up a mock voting booth at home. Create ballots with different fun topics (like favorite ice cream flavor or best superhero). Phoenix can vote on these topics and see how voting works in a fun way.
-
Election Timeline Craft: Together, create a timeline of important events in a typical election. Phoenix can draw pictures or write short descriptions of each step, such as registering to vote, campaigning, and voting day.
-
Discussion and Reflection: After the activities, have a discussion about what Phoenix learned. Ask questions like, "Why do you think voting is important?" and "How do you feel about being a part of an election?"
