Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a beautiful sunset painting using acrylic paints. They will learn about color blending and how to represent the beauty of a sunset on canvas.

Materials and Prep

  • Acrylic paints (red, orange, yellow, purple, blue)
  • Paintbrushes (various sizes)
  • Canvas or thick paper
  • Water cup for rinsing brushes
  • Palette or plate for mixing colors
  • Paper towels for cleaning brushes

Before the lesson, make sure to set up a clean and well-lit workspace. Have all materials ready and easily accessible for the student.

Activities

  • Color Mixing Fun:

The student will start by mixing primary colors to create different shades of sunset colors. They can experiment with blending red, orange, and yellow to see how many different colors they can create!

  • Painting the Sky:

Using a large brush, the student will paint the top half of their canvas with blue, gradually blending in purple and then orange to represent the sky during sunset.

  • Adding the Sun:

The student will use a round brush to create a bright yellow or orange sun. They can place it low on the canvas to show it setting.

  • Finishing Touches:

Finally, the student can add silhouettes of trees or mountains at the bottom of their painting to give it depth and character.
