Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gabe will understand the basics of food technology, including how food is produced, processed, and preserved. He will also learn about the role of technology in making food safer and more delicious!

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a computer or tablet to watch videos about food technology.
  • A notebook and pen for taking notes.
  • Access to a kitchen (if possible) for practical activities.
  • Optional: Ingredients for a simple recipe to explore food tech hands-on.

Before the lesson, find some interesting videos or documentaries on food technology that are age-appropriate for Gabe. Prepare a simple recipe that he can follow, if he wants to try cooking!

Activities

  • Watch and Discuss:

Start by watching a fun video about food technology. After watching, discuss what Gabe learned and any cool facts he found interesting.

  • Food Technology Scavenger Hunt:

Create a scavenger hunt in the kitchen where Gabe finds different food items and identifies how they are processed (e.g., canned beans, frozen vegetables). This will help him understand the journey of food from farm to table.

  • Simple Recipe Experiment:

If possible, let Gabe choose a simple recipe to make, focusing on how technology helps in cooking (e.g., using a blender, microwave, or oven). Discuss how these tools make cooking easier and more fun!

  • Food Technology Quiz:

Create a fun quiz based on the videos watched and the discussion. This will help reinforce what he learned and make it engaging!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that food technology helps keep our food safe and tasty? What do you think some examples are?"
  • "How do you think food gets from farms to our plates? Let's think about the different steps involved!"
  • "What kinds of technology do you see in our kitchen? Can you name some tools that help us cook?"
  • "Why do you think it's important to preserve food? How does that help us?"
  • "Can you think of a food that has changed because of technology? What makes it different now?"
  • "What was your favorite part of the video we watched? Did you learn something surprising?"
  • "How does cooking with technology make things easier for us? Do you prefer cooking with or without it?"
  • "What are some foods you like that are made using technology? Do you think they would taste different without it?"
  • "If you could invent a new kitchen gadget, what would it be and how would it help with food?"
  • "How does understanding food technology help us make better choices about what we eat?"
