Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of storytelling, character development, and the science fiction genre through the lens of the popular television series Doctor Who. The student will create their own Doctor Who-inspired character and storyline, enhancing their creativity and writing skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or paper for writing
  • Pencils or pens
  • Coloring materials (crayons, markers, etc.) for character design
  • Access to a quiet space for brainstorming and writing
  • Basic knowledge of Doctor Who characters and plots (optional: watch a few episodes beforehand)

Activities

  • Character Creation:

The student will create their own Doctor Who-inspired character. They can decide on their character's name, appearance, special abilities, and backstory. Encourage them to think about how their character fits into the Doctor Who universe.

  • Story Outline:

Once the character is created, the student will outline a short story featuring their character. They should include a beginning, middle, and end, and think about the challenges their character will face.

  • Illustration:

After writing their story, the student will illustrate their character and a key scene from their story. This will help them visualize their ideas and make the story more engaging.

  • Sharing Time:

The student will present their character and story to a family member or friend. This will help build their confidence in sharing their creative work and improve their speaking skills.

Talking Points

  • "What makes a great character? Think about what you love about the Doctor or their companions!"
  • "How does your character's backstory influence their actions? Every good character has a history!"
  • "What challenges will your character face? Remember, conflict is essential for a good story!"
  • "Why do you think Doctor Who is so popular? Is it the adventures, the characters, or something else?"
  • "How can illustrations help tell your story? Visuals can make your ideas come alive!"
  • "What did you enjoy most about creating your character? Was it the design, the story, or something else?"
