Objective
By the end of this lesson, Abby will be able to understand and perform basic addition problems using fun and engaging activities. She will learn to add numbers together and understand the concept of combining quantities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayon
- Two different colored markers or crayons (optional)
- A comfortable space to sit and learn
Before the lesson, ensure that Abby understands the numbers 1 through 10, as this will help her with the addition activities.
Activities
- Counting Objects:
Gather some small items like buttons, toys, or blocks. Have Abby count out a certain number of items, then ask her to add more items to that group. For example, if she has 3 blocks and you add 2 more, ask her how many blocks there are now.
- Drawing and Adding:
On a piece of paper, ask Abby to draw a certain number of stars, then ask her to draw more stars. Help her count the total number of stars drawn. This visual representation will help her understand addition better.
- Addition Stories:
Create simple stories that involve addition. For example, "If you have 2 apples and your friend gives you 3 more, how many apples do you have now?" Encourage Abby to use her fingers to count if needed.
- Number Line Jump:
Draw a number line on the ground (or use a piece of paper). Have Abby jump to represent addition. For example, if she starts at 4 and you say to add 3, she will jump to 5, 6, and then 7!
Talking Points
- "When we add, we are putting things together! Can you tell me what happens when we put 2 and 3 together?"
- "Let's count together! If I have 1 toy and you give me 1 more, how many toys do I have now?"
- "Addition is like magic! We can make numbers grow by combining them. What number do you think we will get if we add 4 and 2?"
- "You can use your fingers to help you add! If I say 3 plus 2, can you show me on your fingers?"
- "Every time we add, we are making a bigger number! What do you think is bigger: 5 or 3 plus 2?"
- "Great job! Remember, adding is just counting more! If you have 6 candies and get 2 more, how many do you have now?"
