Objective
By the end of this lesson, Abby will be able to understand and solve simple addition problems using fun activities that make learning enjoyable. She will gain confidence in her addition skills and be able to add numbers up to 10.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers
- Small objects (like buttons, coins, or blocks) for counting
- A timer (optional, for timed activities)
- Space to work comfortably
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and find a quiet, comfortable space for Abby to work. It’s helpful to review numbers 1-10 with her before starting the activities.
Activities
-
Counting with Objects:
Use small objects to practice addition. For example, take 3 buttons and add 2 more. Ask Abby to count them all together to find the total.
-
Drawing Addition Stories:
Have Abby draw pictures that tell a story about addition. For instance, she could draw 3 apples and then 2 more apples, and write the equation (3 + 2 = 5) below her drawing.
-
Addition Bingo:
Create a Bingo card with different sums (like 2, 4, 6, etc.). Call out addition problems, and if Abby has the answer on her card, she can mark it. The first to get a line wins!
-
Sing an Addition Song:
Make up a fun song about addition. For example, "If I have 1 and I get 1 more, how many do I have? 2 is the score!" Singing helps make learning memorable!
Talking Points
- "Abby, can you help me count these buttons? Let’s see how many we have when we put them together!"
- "When we add, we are putting things together. Can you show me with your drawing how you can add 3 flowers and 2 flowers?"
- "Great job! Now, let’s play Bingo! When I say an addition problem, you can mark it if you have the answer!"
- "Singing is fun! Let’s make up a song about adding numbers. What do you want to add together?"
- "Remember, addition means we are finding out how many we have in total. Can you tell me what 4 + 3 is using your objects?"
- "You did amazing today! How do you feel about adding numbers now? Do you think it’s fun?"
