The student will engage in a role-playing activity that encourages empathy and critical thinking about the events and motivations of the time.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pen for notes and scripts
- Costumes or props (optional, but can enhance the role-playing experience)
- Access to basic information about the Magna Carta and its key figures (King John, the Barons, Archbishop Stephen Langton, etc.)
- Space to act out the role-playing scenarios
Before the lesson, familiarize the student with the key figures and events surrounding the Magna Carta. Encourage them to think about the perspectives of each character they will portray.
Activities
-
Research and Character Selection:
The student will research different historical figures involved in the creation of the Magna Carta. They will choose one character to portray, such as King John, a Baron, or Archbishop Stephen Langton. This will help them understand the motivations and viewpoints of different stakeholders in the event.
-
Script Writing:
The student will write a short script or outline of what their character might say during a debate about the Magna Carta. This will encourage them to think critically about the issues at stake and articulate their character's perspective.
-
Role-Playing Debate:
The student will engage in a role-playing debate with you or another family member acting as different characters. They will present their arguments for or against the Magna Carta based on their character's viewpoint, fostering discussion and understanding of the historical significance.
-
Artistic Representation:
The student can create a visual representation of the Magna Carta, such as a poster or a drawing that includes key figures and events. This will help reinforce their learning through a creative outlet.
