Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored the themes of community and identity through the lens of the pride and furry communities, as well as the "Warrior Cats" series. They will create original digital artwork that reflects these themes, while also enhancing their skills in English, Art, Math, Science, History, Geography, French, and Music.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer with digital drawing software (e.g., Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, etc.)
  • Access to "Warrior Cats" book series by Erin Hunter
  • Research materials on the pride and furry communities (websites, articles)
  • Basic math tools (calculator, paper for notes)
  • Access to a music program or piano
  • Art supplies (if desired for sketching ideas before digital drawing)

Activities

  • Research and Discussion: Start by exploring the pride and furry communities. Discuss their values, symbols, and what they mean to their members. Use this discussion to brainstorm ideas for digital artwork that represents these communities.

  • Character Creation: Using the "Warrior Cats" series as inspiration, create original characters that blend traits from the pride and furry communities. Write a short description for each character, including their background and personality.

  • Digital Art Creation: Using the digital drawing software, create a piece of art that combines elements from the pride and furry communities with the "Warrior Cats" theme. Focus on color, symbolism, and character design.

  • Math Integration: Calculate the area and perimeter of the digital canvas. Discuss geometric shapes used in the artwork and how they can be applied in real-world scenarios.

  • Music Composition: Compose a short melody on the piano that reflects the mood of the artwork. Discuss how music can enhance visual art and vice versa.

Talking Points

  • Art: "Art is a way to express who we are. What symbols represent your identity?"
  • English: "Writing helps us clarify our thoughts. How can you describe your character's journey?"
  • History: "Understanding communities helps us learn about our past. How have these communities shaped society?"
  • Math: "Math is everywhere, even in art! Can you find shapes in your design?"
  • Music: "Music can tell a story just like art. What story do you want your music to tell?"
  • Physical Education: "Movement can inspire creativity. How does dancing make you feel when you create?"
  • Science: "Colors can affect our emotions. What colors will you use to convey feelings in your artwork?"
  • Social Studies: "Communities are made up of diverse individuals. How do different backgrounds contribute to a community?"
  • French: "Learning new languages can expand our understanding of culture. How do you say 'community' in French?" (Cultural integration: "Communauté")
  • Useful Phrases: "In art, we can say: 'L'art est une expression de soi.' (Art is an expression of oneself.)" and "In music, remember: 'La musique est le langage des émotions.' (Music is the language of emotions.)"
