Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to bake delicious cookies and assemble them into fun ice cream sandwiches, while also practicing measuring, mixing, and creative design skills!

Materials and Prep

  • Cookie dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • Ice cream (any flavor the student likes)
  • Sprinkles, chocolate chips, or other fun toppings
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven (with adult supervision)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Cookie cutters (optional)
  • Cooling rack

Before starting, make sure to preheat the oven and gather all materials to have everything ready for fun baking!

Activities

  • Measure and Mix:

Start by measuring out the cookie dough ingredients together. Let the student pour and mix to learn how to combine ingredients!

  • Bake the Cookies:

Shape the cookie dough into balls or use cookie cutters to create fun shapes. Place them on the baking sheet and bake them in the oven (with adult help).

  • Cool Down:

Once baked, let the cookies cool on a rack. This is a great time to talk about why cooling is important!

  • Assemble the Sandwiches:

Once the cookies are cool, let the student scoop some ice cream onto one cookie and place another cookie on top to make a sandwich. They can also add sprinkles or chocolate chips for decoration!

  • Taste Test:

Finally, enjoy the ice cream sandwiches together! Discuss the flavors and what they liked best about their creation.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think will happen when we mix these ingredients together?"
  • "Can you smell how yummy the cookies will be when they bake?"
  • "Why do you think we need to let the cookies cool before we eat them?"
  • "How many scoops of ice cream do you want on your sandwich?"
  • "What toppings do you want to make your sandwich extra special?"
