Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to read and spell consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words and some sight words through engaging activities. The student will also enhance their reading fluency and vocabulary by practicing these words in a fun and interactive way.

Materials and Prep

  • Index cards or paper cut into cards (for creating word cards)
  • Markers or crayons (for writing the words)
  • A timer (optional, for timed activities)
  • A small container or bag (for the "pop" game)
  • List of CVC words and sight words (prepared in advance)

Before the lesson, prepare a set of CVC words (like cat, dog, and sun) and sight words (like the, and, it) on the index cards. Place them in the container or bag for the "pop" game.

Activities

  • CVC Word Creation

Have the student use the markers or crayons to write down CVC words on the index cards. Encourage them to sound out the words as they write. Once they finish, they can read the words aloud to you.

  • Sight Word Search

Hide the sight word cards around the room. Ask the student to find them and read each word aloud when they discover one. This will help reinforce their recognition of sight words in a playful manner.

  • Pop Game

In this fun game, place all the CVC and sight word cards into a container. The student will take turns drawing a card, reading the word aloud, and spelling it. If they spell it correctly, they keep the card; if not, it goes back into the container. Add a few "pop" cards that mean the player has to put back all their cards and start over for an extra challenge!

  • Reading Relay

Set up a reading relay where the student has to run to a specific spot, read a CVC word or sight word, and then run back. This combines physical activity with reading practice, making it more engaging.

Talking Points

  • "Can you sound out this word? Let's break it down together!"
  • "How many letters are in this word? What sound does each letter make?"
  • "Great job finding that sight word! Can you use it in a sentence?"
  • "What do you think will happen if you draw a 'pop' card? Let's see!"
  • "Why do you think it's important to learn sight words? They help us read faster!"
