Objective
By the end of this lesson, Brinley will have explored her interests in design and art while learning essential math and reading skills. She will practice sewing and design skills, understand numbers and place values, and develop her ability to read and write effectively. Additionally, she will learn about her community and map skills, all while having fun with creative activities!
Materials and Prep
- Colored pencils and markers
- Paper for drawing and writing
- Fabric scraps for sewing practice
- Needle and thread (with adult supervision)
- Ruler for measuring
- Play money for counting exercises
- Clock or drawing of a clock for telling time
- Storybook for reading comprehension
- Map of the local area
Before starting the lesson, make sure Brinley is comfortable with basic sewing and has a safe workspace. Prepare a storybook that is age-appropriate and has clear main ideas and details.
Activities
- Design a Dress: Brinley can draw a dress design on paper using colored pencils. She can label the different parts of the dress and explain her choices. This activity will help her express her creativity while practicing writing full sentences.
- Sewing Practice: Using fabric scraps, Brinley can practice sewing simple shapes together. She can create a small pillow or a soft toy. This will introduce her to basic sewing techniques and help develop her fine motor skills.
- Math with Money: Brinley will use play money to create a small store. She can price her "items" and practice counting, adding, and comparing money. This will reinforce her understanding of numbers and basic math operations.
- Story Time: Read a story together and discuss the main idea and key details. Ask Brinley questions about the characters and plot to enhance her comprehension skills. She can also draw her favorite scene from the story.
- Map Adventure: Using a simple map, Brinley can practice following directions. Set up a treasure hunt in the house or yard using the map, which will teach her how to read maps and use a compass.
- Shape Scavenger Hunt: Go on a hunt around the house or yard to find 2D and 3D shapes. Brinley can draw the shapes she finds and label them. This will help her recognize shapes in her environment.
Talking Points
- "What colors do you want to use for your dress design? Let's think about how they match!"
- "Can you tell me what you like most about sewing? What do you think is the hardest part?"
- "When we count money, how can we tell which amount is greater? Let’s practice together!"
- "What do you think the main idea of the story is? Can you tell me in your own words?"
- "How do we use a map to find our way? What do you see on the map?"
- "What shapes did you find on our scavenger hunt? Can you draw them for me?"
