Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jeremahli will be able to understand and perform basic addition and subtraction problems using fun and engaging activities. He will develop a strong foundation in these essential math skills while enjoying the learning process.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil for writing problems.
- A timer or stopwatch for timed activities.
- A comfortable space to work and play.
- Prepare a list of fun addition and subtraction problems suitable for a 6-year-old.
Activities
-
Math Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around the house where Jeremahli has to find items in pairs. For example, if he finds 3 apples, he can write down "3 + 3 = 6" or "6 - 3 = 3" depending on what he chooses to do with the items.
-
Story Problems: Make up fun stories that involve addition and subtraction. For example, "If you have 5 cookies and you give 2 to a friend, how many do you have left?" Let Jeremahli draw pictures to represent the problems.
-
Math Relay Race: Set up a relay race where Jeremahli has to solve a math problem at each station before moving on to the next. For example, "What is 2 + 4?" or "What is 10 - 3?" This will keep him active while learning!
Talking Points
- "Okay, Jeremahli, when we add, we are putting things together. Can you show me with your fingers how many you have if I say 2 + 3?"
- "Subtraction is like taking away. If you have 5 candies and you eat 2, how many are left? Let's count them!"
- "Math can be like a puzzle! When we solve problems, we are putting the pieces together to find the answer."
- "You can use things around the house to help with math. What items can we count together?"
- "Remember, it's okay to make mistakes! Every time we try, we learn something new!"
- "Let’s have fun with numbers! Math is everywhere, like in games and stories!"
