Objective

By the end of this lesson, Leslyne will be able to identify and use capital letters appropriately, as well as understand and apply different sentence enders such as periods, question marks, and exclamation points in her writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Colored markers or crayons (optional)
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard (if available)

Before the lesson, ensure that Leslyne understands the basic structure of a sentence and has some familiarity with writing simple sentences.

Activities

  • Capital Letter Hunt: Leslyne will search through a book or any printed material to find words that start with capital letters. She can write them down on her paper and discuss why those words are capitalized.

  • Sentence Building with Enders: Leslyne will create her own sentences using different sentence enders. Start with a simple sentence and then change the ender to see how it changes the meaning or tone.

  • Creative Drawing and Writing: Leslyne will draw a picture and write a sentence about it. She will use at least one capital letter and one sentence ender. This will help her connect her writing to her creativity.

  • Ender Charades: Leslyne will act out different sentences based on the enders. For example, if she uses an exclamation point, she will express excitement in her actions. This will make learning fun and interactive!

Talking Points

  • "Capital letters are used at the beginning of sentences and for proper nouns, like names and places. Can you think of any names that start with a capital letter?"
  • "Sentence enders tell us how to read a sentence. A period tells us the statement is finished, a question mark shows that it’s a question, and an exclamation point expresses strong feelings. Can you give me an example of each?"
  • "When we write, using the correct ender changes how our reader understands our message. Let’s practice by changing a sentence and its ender together!"
  • "Drawing helps us imagine what we're writing about. What did you draw, and how can we write a sentence that describes it using a capital letter and an ender?"
