Objective
By the end of this lesson, Maisie-Jane will be able to define what a verb is, identify verbs in sentences, and use them correctly in her own sentences.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pen or pencil
- Whiteboard or large paper (optional)
- Colorful markers or crayons (optional)
- List of sentences (can be created during the lesson)
Before the lesson, think about some fun sentences or stories that you can use to identify verbs together. Prepare to explain the concept in simple terms.
Activities
-
Verb Hunt:
Maisie-Jane will go on a "verb hunt" around the house or yard. She will look for actions happening around her and write down the verbs she sees. For example, "running," "jumping," or "eating."
-
Verb Charades:
In this fun activity, Maisie-Jane will act out different verbs while you guess what they are. This will help her understand verbs as actions and make the lesson interactive.
-
Sentence Creation:
Using the verbs identified from the hunt or charades, Maisie-Jane will create her own sentences. Encourage her to be creative and even silly with her sentences!
-
Verb Art:
Maisie-Jane will draw a picture that represents one of her favorite verbs and write a sentence about it. This combines creativity with writing!
Talking Points
- "A verb is a word that shows an action or a state of being. Can you think of some actions you do every day?"
- "Every sentence needs a verb. It tells us what the subject is doing. For example, in 'The cat sleeps,' what is the verb?"
- "Verbs can be action words, like 'run' or 'dance,' or they can be linking verbs, like 'is' or 'are.' Can you give me an example of each?"
- "When we write sentences, we need to make sure our verbs match the subject. If I say 'She runs,' what do you think I should say if it's 'They'?"
- "Verbs can change form based on the tense. For example, 'jump' becomes 'jumped' in the past. Can you think of a verb and tell me how it changes?"
- "Using verbs makes our writing more exciting! Instead of saying 'The dog is fast,' we can say 'The dog runs quickly.' Which do you like better?"
