Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to blend simple letters together to form basic sounds and words, enhancing their understanding of phonics and early reading skills.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- List of simple letter combinations (like "at", "an", "it", "in")
- Space to move around for activities
Before the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with the individual letters and their sounds. Prepare a comfortable space for activities and have the paper and crayons ready for use.
Activities
-
Letter Blending Game
Say a letter sound and ask the student to repeat it. Then, introduce a second letter sound and blend them together. For example, say "b" and then "at" to make "bat". Make it fun by using different voices or sounds!
-
Color and Create
Ask the student to draw pictures of objects that start with the blended sounds you’ve practiced. For example, draw a "bat" when practicing "b" and "at". This helps them connect sounds to visuals!
-
Sound Dance
Play a fun song and pause it to say a blended sound. The student has to dance and make the sound when the music stops. This engages them physically while reinforcing learning!
Talking Points
- "Can you say the sound for the letter 'b'? Now, let's blend it with 'at'. What do we get?"
- "Look at your drawing of a bat! Does it start with the sound we made?"
- "When the music stops, let's make our blended sound together! Ready? Go!"
