Objective

By the end of this lesson, L will understand how to plan for a home-cooked meal by selecting ingredients, making a shopping list, and learning how to shop for those ingredients effectively.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for making a shopping list
  • Access to a cookbook or recipe (can be printed or written down)
  • Calculator (optional for budgeting)
  • Access to a kitchen for cooking (if applicable)

Before the lesson, choose a simple recipe that L would enjoy cooking. Make sure it has a list of ingredients that can be easily found in a grocery store.

Activities

  • Recipe Selection:

Start by choosing a recipe together. Discuss what ingredients are needed and why each one is important for the meal.

  • Making a Shopping List:

Help L create a shopping list based on the recipe. Discuss how to categorize items (like fruits, vegetables, proteins, etc.) to make shopping easier.

  • Budgeting Fun:

If possible, give L a budget for the ingredients. Discuss how to choose items within that budget and the importance of making choices.

  • Shopping Simulation:

Set up a pretend grocery store at home using pantry items. L can practice finding the ingredients on their list and "buying" them.

  • Cooking Time:

If time allows, cook the chosen recipe together, using the ingredients from the shopping list. Discuss the cooking process as you go.
