Squishy Finger Painting Adventure!
Let's get messy and make some colourful art with our fingers!
Setup (5 minutes)
- Cover the work surface with newspaper or plastic sheeting.
- Help the child put on a smock or old clothes.
- Prepare the paints: Squeeze small amounts of red, yellow, and blue paint onto a shallow tray or paper plate, leaving some space between the colours.
- Have paper, damp cloths, and cleanup supplies ready.
Introduction (2-3 minutes)
Show the child the paints. Ask: "What colours do you see?" (Point to red, yellow, blue). "Today, we get to paint using just our fingers! Doesn't that sound fun? Remember, paint stays on the paper or the tray."
Activity: Painting Time! (15-20 minutes)
- Explore Single Colours: Encourage the child to dip one finger into a colour and make marks on the paper. Ask questions like: "How does the paint feel?" "Can you make dots?" "Can you make long lines?" Let them try each primary colour separately.
- Mix it Up: Guide the child to try mixing two colours. "What happens if you swirl a little yellow into the red?" (Guide them to do this either on the tray or the paper). Discover orange! Try mixing blue and yellow (green), or red and blue (purple). Focus on the process of discovery, not perfect colour mixing.
- Free Painting: Let the child paint freely using their fingers and the colours they've explored. Encourage them to cover the paper, make patterns, or just enjoy the squishy feeling. There's no right or wrong way!
Clean Up (5 minutes)
This is part of the process! Guide the child to wipe their hands first with a damp cloth or wipes. If possible, have a small bucket of soapy water nearby for a first rinse before heading to the sink. Help clean the work surface together.
Closure & Sharing (2-3 minutes)
While the painting dries, talk about it! Ask: "What was your favourite part about finger painting?" "Which colours did you use?" "Tell me about your picture." Display the artwork proudly once dry.
