Finger Paint Fun & Letter Shapes
Engage your little artist's senses while introducing basic colors and letter shapes!
Warm-up: Color Chat (5 mins)
Gather your paints. Ask your child: "What colors do you see?" Point to each color (red, yellow, blue) and say its name clearly. Ask, "Which color is your favorite today?" Sing a simple color song if you know one.
Activity 1: Free Finger Painting Fun (10-15 mins)
Show your child how to dip one finger into a paint color and make marks on the paper. Encourage exploration: making dots, lines, swirls, and covering spaces. Ask questions like: "How does the paint feel? Is it cold? Is it slippery?" Let them mix colors if desired and talk about what new colors appear (e.g., "Yellow and blue make green!"). Focus on the sensory experience and vocabulary building.
Activity 2: Letter Shape Painting (10 mins)
Choose a simple letter shape, like 'S'. Say, "Let's make the letter 'S'. It looks like a wiggly snake! Ssssss." Gently guide their finger (or paint alongside them) to trace the letter 'S' shape on their paper with paint. Repeat a few times. You can do the same with another simple shape like 'O'. "Let's make an 'O'. It’s round like a ball! Oh, oh, oh." Emphasize the shape and the sound.
Wrap-up & Clean-up (5-10 mins)
Talk about the paintings. "Wow, look at all the beautiful colors! Can you show me the letter 'S' you made? What sound does 'S' make?" Praise their effort and creativity. Set the paintings aside to dry. Clean up together – washing hands is part of the sensory fun! "Let’s wash the slippery paint off our hands."
