Alphabet Sound Safari: S, A, T Adventure!
Materials Needed:
- Large flashcards for S, A, T (uppercase and lowercase)
- Small objects or pictures starting with S (e.g., snake, sun, sock, star)
- Small objects or pictures starting with A (e.g., apple, ant, alligator, astronaut)
- Small objects or pictures starting with T (e.g., tiger, tree, top, turtle)
- Sand tray or salt tray with sand/salt (optional, for tracing)
- Playdough (optional, for forming letters)
- Chart paper or whiteboard (optional)
- Markers or crayons (optional)
Lesson Activities:
- Warm-up: Alphabet Song (5 mins)
Sing the ABC song together enthusiastically. Point to letters if you have an alphabet chart. Make it dynamic with clapping or actions. - Introduction: Super Snake 'S' (5 mins)
Show the 'S' flashcard (both uppercase 'S' and lowercase 's'). Say clearly: "This is the letter S. It makes the sound /sssss/, like a sneaky snake!" Exaggerate the /s/ sound and pretend to slither like a snake. Show the S objects/pictures (snake, sun, sock). Emphasize the beginning sound: "/s/nake", "/s/un", "/s/ock". Ask the student to repeat the sound and words. - Activity: Sound Hunt & Trace 'S' (5 mins)
Hide the 'S' objects/pictures around the learning area. Say "Let's go on a sound safari! Can you find things that start with the /sssss/ sound?" As the student finds each item, have them say its name, focusing on the initial /s/ sound. Afterwards, practice tracing the letter 'S' in the air, making big snake movements. If using a sand tray or playdough, have them trace or form the letter 'S' while saying "/sssss/". - Introduction: Amazing Apple 'A' (5 mins)
Show the 'A' flashcard (both 'A' and 'a'). Say: "This is the letter A. It often makes the sound /a/ like in 'apple'. Open your mouth wide! /a/, /a/, /a/!" Pretend to take a big bite of an apple while making the short /a/ sound. Show the A objects/pictures (apple, ant, alligator). Emphasize the beginning sound: "/a/pple", "/a/nt", "/a/lligator". Have the student practice the sound and words. - Activity: Sound Hunt & Trace 'A' (5 mins)
Hide the 'A' objects/pictures. "Sound safari time again! Let's find the /a/ sound items!" Have the student find them and name them, emphasizing the /a/ sound. Practice tracing 'A' and 'a' in the air, in the sand tray, or with playdough while saying the /a/ sound. - Introduction: Terrific Tiger 'T' (5 mins)
Show the 'T' flashcard ('T' and 't'). Say: "This is the letter T. It makes a quick tapping sound: /t/ /t/ /t/! Like tapping your toes!" Make the crisp /t/ sound (avoid adding 'uh'). Show the T objects/pictures (tiger, tree, top). Emphasize the beginning sound: "/t/iger", "/t/ree", "/t/op". Have the student practice the sound and words. - Activity: Sound Hunt & Trace 'T' (5 mins)
Hide the 'T' objects/pictures. "Last safari hunt! Where are the /t/ sound things hiding?" Have the student find and name them, emphasizing the /t/ sound. Practice tracing 'T' and 't' in the air, in the sand tray, or with playdough while making the /t/ sound. - Blending Practice: Making a Word! (5 mins)
Place the S, A, T flashcards left-to-right in front of the student. Point to 'S' and make the sound: /sssss/. Point to 'A' and make the sound: /a/. Point to 'T' and make the sound: /t/. Say them slowly in sequence: "/sssss/ ... /a/ ... /t/". Then, blend them faster: "/sssaaat/". Finally, say the word clearly: "sat! The sounds make the word 'sat'!" Encourage the student to try blending with you. Repeat 2-3 times. Keep it light and praise effort, not perfection. - Wrap-up & Review (5 mins)
Quickly show the S, A, T flashcards one last time. Ask, "What sound does this letter make?" Praise their effort and recall. Tell them what a great job they did on their first sound safari! Optional: Draw a simple picture together featuring items starting with S, A, T (e.g., a snake sitting under an apple tree).
