Minecraft Math Adventure: Mastering Addition!
Lesson Activities:
Introduction: Setting the Scene (5 mins)
"Welcome, brave Minecraft builder! Today, we're going on a math adventure. Steve needs our help! He has 12 oak wood planks and finds 15 more birch wood planks near his base. How many wood planks does he have in total to build with? Let's find out!"
Activity 1: Building Without Regrouping (10 mins)
"Let's use our special 'Minecraft Blocks' (base-ten blocks or legos). Remember, the long blocks are 'tens' and the small squares are 'ones'."
- Represent 12: Show 1 ten-block and 2 one-blocks.
- Represent 15: Show 1 ten-block and 5 one-blocks.
- Combine the Ones: "Put all the ones blocks together. How many ones do we have?" (2 + 5 = 7). "Is that enough to make a new ten-block?" (No).
- Combine the Tens: "Put all the tens blocks together. How many tens do we have?" (1 + 1 = 2).
- Solve: "So we have 2 tens and 7 ones. That makes 27! Steve has 27 wood planks."
- Practice on Whiteboard: Write 12 + 15 vertically. Add the ones column (2+5=7), then the tens column (1+1=2).
