Long & Short Adventure!

Materials Needed:

  • Collection of household objects with varying lengths (e.g., crayons (new vs. used), pencils, straws cut to different sizes, building blocks, spoons, toy cars, ribbons, yarn pieces)
  • Playdough
  • Two containers or designated spaces labeled (or conceptually understood as) 'Long' and 'Short' (e.g., hoops, placemats)
  • Optional: Chart paper or large sheet of paper, marker

Lesson Activities:

1. Introduction: What's Long, What's Short? (5 mins)

  • Gather your collection of objects. Hold up two contrasting items, like a long pencil and a short crayon.
  • Say: "Look! I have two things here. This pencil is long." Stretch your hands far apart as you say "long".
  • Say: "This crayon is short." Bring your hands close together as you say "short".
  • Repeat with another pair of objects, emphasizing the words "long" and "short" and using hand gestures. Ask the child to repeat the words with you.

2. Sorting Fun! (10 mins)

  • Place the 'Long' and 'Short' containers or designated sorting areas in front of the child.
  • Spread out the collection of objects.
  • Say: "Let's play a sorting game! We need to put all the long things here (point to the long area) and all the short things here (point to the short area)."
  • Pick up an object together. Ask: "Is this long or short?" Guide the child to place it in the correct area.
  • Encourage the child to pick up the remaining objects one by one, ask themselves (or you ask them) "Is it long or short?" and place it in the corresponding area. Provide help and positive reinforcement.

3. Playdough Creations! (10 mins)

  • Give the child some playdough.
  • Say: "Let's make some long and short snakes! Can you roll a really, really long snake?"
  • After they make a long one, say: "Great! Now can you make a very short snake?"
  • Place the snakes side-by-side. Ask: "Which snake is longer? Which snake is shorter?"
  • Experiment with making different lengths.

4. Body Detective (5 mins)

  • Say: "Let's look at ourselves! Do you have long arms or short arms?" (Compare to maybe their fingers). "You have long arms and short fingers!"
  • "Are your legs long or short?" (Compare to toes). "You have long legs and short toes!"
  • Make it silly and fun.

5. Optional: Outdoor/Indoor Hunt (10 mins)

  • Go for a short walk inside or outside.
  • Say: "Let's be detectives and find long and short things! Can you find a long stick? Can you find a short stick?"
  • Look for leaves, blades of grass, shadows, etc.

6. Wrap-up & Review (5 mins)

  • Gather back some of the sorted objects or the playdough snakes.
  • Quickly review: Hold up pairs of objects and ask, "Which one is long? Which one is short?"
  • Praise the child's effort: "You did such a great job finding and sorting long and short things today! You're a super math explorer!"
  • Optional: Draw a long line and a short line on the chart paper and label them.

Assessment:

  • Observe the child's ability to correctly sort most objects into 'long' and 'short' groups during Activity 2.
  • Listen for the child's use of the words 'long' and 'short' during the activities.
  • Note if the child can compare two objects (like the playdough snakes) and identify which is longer/shorter when asked.
