Hello young explorer! Today, we're going on an adventure to discover things that are LONG and things that are SHORT! Are you ready?
Warm-up: The Wiggle Song! (Tune: \"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star\")
Let's get our bodies ready! Sing with me:
Stretch your arms up very long,
Wiggle fingers, sing a song.
Now make your arms all short and tight,
Wiggle, wiggle, with all your might!
(Repeat a couple of times, emphasizing \"long\" with big stretches and \"short\" by scrunching up.)
Activity 1: What is Long? What is Short?
Look! I have some interesting things here. Let's look at them together.
(Show a long object, e.g., a long ribbon.)
\"This ribbon is loooooong. Can you say 'long'? Stretch your arms out wide like this long ribbon!\" (Demonstrate stretching arms wide.)
(Show a short object, e.g., a short ribbon.)
\"This ribbon is short. Can you say 'short'? Make your hands close together like this short ribbon!\" (Demonstrate holding hands close.)
Let's compare! This one is long (hold up long one), and this one is short (hold up short one next to it).
Activity 2: The Sorting Game!
I have two special places: one for LONG things and one for SHORT things. (Point to labeled baskets/areas).
Let's look at our collection of items. We'll pick one up, decide if it's long or short, and put it in the right place!
(Pick up an item, e.g., a long block.)
\"Hmm, is this block long or short? Let's see... it looks long! So it goes in the 'Long' basket.\" (Place it in the basket.) \"Your turn!\"
(Guide the child as they pick items, encouraging them to say \"long\" or \"short\" and place them in the correct basket. Provide gentle correction and praise.)
- \"Is this crayon long or short?\"
- \"Where does the short car go?\"
- \"Wow, you found a long piece of spaghetti!\"
Activity 3: Our Amazing Bodies!
Did you know our bodies have long and short parts too?
- \"Show me your fingers. Are your fingers long or short? My fingers are long!\" (Wiggle fingers).
- \"What about your arm? Is your arm long or short? Stretch it out! That's a long arm!\"
- \"Can you make your body very long like a giraffe? Now can you make your body very short like a little mouse?\" (Encourage stretching and crouching.)
If you have a favorite doll or stuffed animal, let's look at them. Does your teddy have long arms or short arms? Long legs or short legs?
Activity 4: Creative Fun! (Optional)
Choose one of these activities:
- Playdough Power: Can you roll a long snake with playdough? Now can you make a short worm?
- Drawing Time: Let's draw! Can you draw a long line on the paper? Now draw a short line. You can draw long trains and short caterpillars!
Wrap-up: Long and Short Goodbyes!
You did such a great job learning about long and short today, my little explorer!
Let's wave goodbye with a long wave (big, slow wave) and then a short wave (quick, small wave).
Can you find something long in the room before we finish? How about something short?
Great job! You're a long and short expert now!
