Fela's Percentage Power Hour: Unlocking Discounts, Stats, and More!

Hey Fela! Get ready to unlock the amazing world of percentages. It might sound like just math, but percentages are everywhere – from nabbing the best deals while shopping to understanding your favorite gamer's stats or even figuring out how much of your phone battery is left. By the end of this lesson, you'll be a percentage pro!

What You'll Learn Today:

  • What a percentage actually means.
  • How to magically switch between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • How to find a percentage of any number (like calculating that awesome discount!).
  • How to use percentages in real-life situations.

Section 1: What in the World IS a Percentage?

The word "percent" comes from Latin and means "per hundred" or "out of 100." So, when we say 50 percent (written as 50%), it literally means 50 out of 100.

Think of a big chocolate bar with 100 tiny squares. If you eat 25 squares, you've eaten 25% of the chocolate bar!

Where have you seen percentages recently, Fela? (Pause for discussion: sales, grades, phone battery, food labels, game scores, news reports etc.)

Section 2: The Conversion Crew - Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages!

These three are like best friends who can transform into each other. Let's see how!

From Fraction to Percent:

To change a fraction to a percent, divide the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator), then multiply the result by 100 and add the % symbol.

Example: 1/4 => 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 => 0.25 × 100 = 25%

Fraction Flash! Try these, Fela:

  • 1/2 = ? %
  • 3/5 = ? %
  • 7/10 = ? %

(Answers: 50%, 60%, 70%)

From Decimal to Percent:

This is super easy! Just move the decimal point two places to the RIGHT and add the % symbol. (It's like multiplying by 100).

Example: 0.75 => 75%

Example: 0.09 => 9%

Decimal Dash! Try these:

  • 0.30 = ? %
  • 0.05 = ? %
  • 1.20 = ? % (Aha! A trickier one! What does over 100% mean?)

(Answers: 30%, 5%, 120% - which means more than the whole!)

From Percent to Decimal:

Do the opposite! Move the decimal point two places to the LEFT and remove the % symbol. (It's like dividing by 100).

Example: 45% => 0.45

Example: 8% => 0.08 (Be careful to add a zero if needed!)

Percent Plunge! Try these:

  • 67% = ?
  • 2% = ?
  • 150% = ?

(Answers: 0.67, 0.02, 1.50)

From Percent to Fraction:

Put the percentage amount over 100, then simplify the fraction if you can.

Example: 60% = 60/100. Now simplify: divide both by 10... 6/10... divide both by 2... 3/5. So, 60% = 3/5.

Fraction Fusion! Try these:

  • 25% = ? / 100 = ? (simplified)
  • 75% = ? / 100 = ? (simplified)
  • 10% = ? / 100 = ? (simplified)

(Answers: 25/100 = 1/4, 75/100 = 3/4, 10/100 = 1/10)

Section 3: The Percentage Sleuth - Finding a Percentage of a Number!

This is one of the most useful skills! Here's how to find a percentage of a number:

  1. Change the percent to a decimal (remember, move the decimal two places left!).
  2. Multiply the decimal by the number.

Example: What is 20% of 50?

  1. 20% = 0.20
  2. 0.20 × 50 = 10

So, 20% of 50 is 10.

Activity: Shopping Spree Math!

Let's use those sales flyers or look up some items online! (Or use these examples)

  • A cool video game costs $60. It's on sale for 25% off!
    • How much is the discount in dollars? (25% of $60)
    • What is the final sale price? ($60 - discount)
  • You find a pair of headphones for $120, and they are 15% off.
    • What's the discount amount?
    • What do you pay?

(Game: 25% = 0.25. 0.25 * $60 = $15 discount. Sale price = $60 - $15 = $45)

(Headphones: 15% = 0.15. 0.15 * $120 = $18 discount. Sale price = $120 - $18 = $102)

Activity: Tip Time!

You and your family go out for a meal. The bill is $40. You want to leave a good tip, say 18%.

  • How much is the tip? (18% of $40)
  • What is the total cost of the meal including the tip?

(18% = 0.18. 0.18 * $40 = $7.20 tip. Total = $40 + $7.20 = $47.20)

Section 4: Percentage Power-Ups - Real-World Quest!

Let's see percentages in action in other cool ways!

Sports Stats Spotlight:

Your favorite basketball player takes 20 shots and makes 12 of them. What is their shooting percentage?

Hint: This is like finding what percentage 12 is of 20. (12 ÷ 20) × 100 = ? %

(Answer: (12/20) * 100 = 0.6 * 100 = 60%)

(Optional: Look up some real sports stats for Fela's favorite player or team and discuss what the percentages mean.)

Phone Battery Check:

If your phone has a 4000 mAh (milliampere-hour) battery capacity and it’s currently at 75% charge, how many mAh are left?

(75% of 4000 mAh. 0.75 * 4000 = 3000 mAh)

(Optional Fun Challenge) Recipe Remix:

Imagine a simple cookie recipe calls for 200g of flour and makes 10 cookies. If Fela wants to make 50% MORE cookies (a bigger batch!), how much extra flour will she need? What's the new total amount of flour?

(50% of 200g = 0.50 * 200g = 100g extra flour. New total = 200g + 100g = 300g flour.)

Section 5: You're a Percentage Pro!

Amazing work, Fela! You've learned how to define percentages, convert them, and use them to solve real-world problems like finding discounts and understanding stats.

What's one new way you think you might use percentages this week?

To really lock in your new skills, try the "Percentage Power!" worksheet. Remember, practice makes perfect (or should I say, 100% proficient!).

Teacher's Note for Fela: If any part feels tricky, we can go over it again with different examples! We can also make the problems simpler or more challenging depending on how you're feeling. The goal is for you to feel confident with percentages!
