By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate beginning reading skills, including letter recognition and phonemic awareness.
Materials and Prep
- Alphabet flashcards or letter tiles
- Picture cards with simple words
- Whiteboard or chalkboard
- Dry erase markers or chalk
Activities
- Letter Recognition Game: Show the student flashcards or letter tiles with uppercase and lowercase letters. Ask the student to name the letters and match uppercase and lowercase pairs.
- Phonemic Awareness Exercise: Use picture cards with simple words. Say the word out loud and ask the student to identify the beginning sound or the ending sound of the word.
- Word Building Activity: Write a simple word on the whiteboard or chalkboard, leaving out one letter. Ask the student to identify the missing letter and write it in the correct spot to complete the word.
- Reading Aloud: Read a short story or a picture book to the student. Encourage the student to follow along and point to the words as you read.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun learning about letters and how they make words."
- "We will play a game to practice recognizing letters. Can you tell me the name of this letter? How about this one?"
- "Now, let's listen to some words and figure out the sounds they start or end with. What sound does the word 'cat' start with?"
- "Let's try building words together. I will write a word on the board, but one letter is missing. Can you tell me which letter completes the word 'dog'?"
- "Lastly, we will read a story together. Follow along with your finger as I read the words."
