By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use different parts of speech correctly in English sentences.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Notebook or loose-leaf paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Parts of Speech Identification
Write down 10 sentences from a book or any other written source. Underline or highlight different parts of speech in each sentence. Label them accordingly (e.g., noun, verb, adjective, etc.). Once you have done this for all 10 sentences, review your work and see if you can identify any patterns or commonalities.
-
Activity 2: Create Your Own Sentences
Using the parts of speech you identified in Activity 1, create your own sentences. Aim to include at least one example of each part of speech. Write down your sentences in your notebook or on loose-leaf paper. Share your sentences with a family member or friend and see if they can identify the parts of speech correctly.
-
Activity 3: Parts of Speech Challenge
Challenge yourself by creating a story or paragraph that includes as many different parts of speech as possible. Be creative and have fun with it! Once you have completed your challenge, read your story or paragraph aloud to practice using the different parts of speech effectively.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
- "In English grammar, parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences."
- "Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. For example, 'cat,' 'book,' and 'happiness' are all nouns."
- "Verbs are words that show action or state of being. They express what the subject of the sentence is doing or being. For example, 'run,' 'jump,' and 'is' are all verbs."
- "Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. They provide more information about the nouns in a sentence. For example, 'beautiful,' 'tall,' and 'delicious' are all adjectives."
- "Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide more information about how, when, where, or to what extent something is done. For example, 'quickly,' 'very,' and 'often' are all adverbs."
- "Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. They help avoid repetition and make sentences less repetitive. For example, 'he,' 'she,' and 'it' are all pronouns."
- "Prepositions are words that show relationships between other words in a sentence. They indicate location, time, direction, or manner. For example, 'in,' 'on,' and 'through' are all prepositions."
- "Conjunctions are words that join words, phrases, or clauses together. They help connect ideas and show relationships between them. For example, 'and,' 'but,' and 'or' are all conjunctions."
- "Interjections are words or phrases used to express strong emotions or surprise. They are usually followed by an exclamation mark. For example, 'Wow!' 'Ouch!' and 'Yay!' are all interjections."
