You want to place stones at specific points along a path, but the distances aren't clean whole numbers—they are exact values like 5√2 feet. If you round to decimals too early, your garden won't fit together perfectly. This is why we use radicals: they are the "HD" version of numbers. Decimals are just a blurry approximation.

Quick Challenge: If you have a square plot of land with an area of 50 square feet, how long is one side? (Answer: √50). Can we make that number easier to work with? Let's find out.

2. Instruction: "The Rules of the Radical Club" (I Do)

Simplifying (The Foundation)

Think of a radical like a house. To "get out of the house," you need a partner (a pair of identical factors).

  • Example: √50. Factor it: 25 × 2. Since 25 is a perfect square (5 × 5), the 5s "leave the house" as a single 5, and the 2 stays inside. Result: 5√2.

Addition & Subtraction (The "Like Terms" Rule)

You can only add or subtract radicals if the "radicand" (the number inside) is exactly the same. It’s just like combining 2x + 3x.

  • Rule: a√n + b√n = (a+b)√n.
  • Example: 3√7 + 5√7 = 8√7. (But 3√7 + 2√5? You can't touch it. They aren't in the same club.)

Multiplication (The "House" Rule)

Numbers outside the house multiply together; numbers inside the house multiply together.

  • Rule: (a√b) * (c√d) = (ac)√(bd).
  • Example: 2√3 * 4√5 = 8√15.

Let's work through these together. Imagine we are measuring ingredients for a "Radical Stew."

  1. Simplify: √72. (Hint: What's the biggest perfect square that goes into 72? 36!) -> Check: 6√2
  2. Combine: 4√3 + √27. (Wait! We must simplify √27 first. √27 = 3√3). Now add: 4√3 + 3√3. -> Check: 7√3
  3. Multiply: 3√2 * √8. -> Check: 3√16. Wait, √16 is 4! So 3 * 4 = 12.

The Project: You are going to create a geometric work of art using radical lengths.
