Materials Needed

  • Paper and pencil
  • Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
  • 10–20 small objects, such as buttons, coins, blocks, or LEGO pieces
  • Index cards or small pieces of paper
  • A timer or clock
  • Optional: calculator or digital drawing tool

  • Explain how one action, object, or person can contribute to a larger result.
  • Use repeated addition and multiplication to show how small groups grow.
  • Create and explain a practical plan showing how one helpful action can make a difference.

Introduction: The One-Spark Challenge

Hook: Ask, “Can one person, one idea, or one small action make a difference?”

Invite the learner to think of examples, such as:

  • One seed growing into a plant
  • One kind word improving someone’s day
  • One person beginning a recycling project
  • One dollar saved each week
  • One small piece added to a building project

Explain: “Today we will investigate how one thing can become part of something much bigger. We will use math, discussion, and creativity to show how small steps create large results.”

Body

Part 1: I Do — One Becomes Many

Place one object on the table. Add another object beside it, and continue until there are four groups of three objects.

Think aloud:

“I see four equal groups. Each group has three objects. I can count by ones, use repeated addition, or use multiplication.”

Write:

  • Repeated addition: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
  • Multiplication: 4 × 3 = 12

Explain the vocabulary:

  • Group: A collection of objects.
  • Equal groups: Groups with the same number of objects.
  • Factor: A number being multiplied.
  • Product: The answer to a multiplication problem.

Quick Check: Ask:

  • How many groups are there?
  • How many objects are in each group?
  • What addition sentence matches the groups?
  • What multiplication sentence matches the groups?

Part 2: We Do — Build It, Draw It, Explain It

Work together to create equal groups using the small objects.

  1. Choose a number of groups from 2 to 5.
  2. Choose how many objects will be in each group.
  3. Build the groups.
  4. Count the total number of objects.
  5. Write a repeated-addition sentence.
  6. Write a multiplication sentence.
  7. Explain how the groups show “one becoming many.”

Example: If there are 3 groups with 4 objects in each group:

  • Repeated addition: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
  • Multiplication: 3 × 4 = 12

Think-Pair-Share Alternative

If another person is available, the learner explains their model to a parent, sibling, or partner. If working independently, the learner can explain it aloud to a stuffed animal, record a short audio explanation, or write the explanation in a notebook.

Formative Assessment: Check whether the learner:

  • Creates equal groups correctly.
  • Matches the number of groups to the correct multiplication factor.
  • Calculates the total accurately.
  • Explains their thinking using complete sentences.

Part 3: We Do — One Helpful Action

Discuss how one action can create a chain of positive results.

Choose one scenario:

  • One person picks up five pieces of litter.
  • One person reads for 15 minutes each day.
  • One person plants three seeds.
  • One person gives one kind compliment each morning.
  • One person saves one dollar each week.

Ask the learner:

  • What is the one small action?
  • What could happen if it is repeated?
  • How could other people join in?
  • What result might happen after one week or one month?

Create a simple cause-and-effect chart:

One Small Action Repeated Action Possible Result
Pick up 5 pieces of litter 5 pieces × 7 days = 35 pieces A cleaner yard or park

Part 4: You Do — “One Small Step” Project

The learner chooses one small action and creates a mini-project showing how it could grow into a larger result.

Allow the learner to choose one format:

  • A one-page poster
  • A comic strip with four panels
  • A short written plan
  • A mini-presentation
  • A digital slide or drawing
  • A real-life action completed at home

The project must include:

  1. The starting point: What is the one small action?
  2. The pattern: What happens when the action is repeated?
  3. The math: Include one addition or multiplication equation.
  4. The result: What larger change could happen?
  5. The explanation: Why does this action matter?

Example: “I will read one chapter each day. In seven days, I will read seven chapters. If I read a little every day, I can finish an entire book.”

Optional Hands-On Challenge: One-Minute Growth Test

Set a timer for one minute. The learner performs a safe, simple action, such as stacking blocks, writing words, sorting objects, or making paper shapes.

  1. Count how many actions or objects are completed in one minute.
  2. Estimate how many could be completed in five minutes.
  3. Calculate the estimate using multiplication.
  4. Test the estimate if desired.
  5. Compare the estimate with the actual result.
