Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use different parts of speech in sentences while exploring the book "Pax" by Sara Pennypacker.
Materials and Prep
- Copy of the book "Pax" by Sara Pennypacker
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
Activities
-
Read a chapter or a selected passage from "Pax" together.
As you read, pay attention to the different words used. After reading, write down ten words from the passage on a piece of paper.
-
Review the parts of speech with the student. Explain what nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are.
Ask the student to identify the parts of speech for each of the ten words they wrote down. Write the words on the board or a separate piece of paper and label them accordingly.
-
Have the student create sentences using the words they identified. Encourage them to use different parts of speech in their sentences.
For example, if one of the words is "dog," they could create a sentence like "The fluffy dog barked loudly."
-
Discuss the sentences the student created. Ask them to identify the parts of speech used in each sentence.
Encourage the student to explain why they chose certain parts of speech for specific words.
