Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply the process of growing kiwi fruit from seeds.

Materials and Prep

  • Kiwi fruit
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic ziplock bags
  • Water

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the parts of a kiwi fruit and the process of seed germination.

Activities

  1. Begin by cutting open a ripe kiwi fruit and extracting the seeds.

  2. Place the extracted seeds on a damp paper towel and fold it over to cover them.

  3. Put the paper towel with the seeds inside a plastic ziplock bag and seal it.

  4. Label the bag with the date and place it in a warm and sunny location.

  5. Check the bag every few days to ensure the paper towel remains damp. If it starts to dry out, add a few drops of water.

  6. Observe the seeds closely and record any changes you notice, such as sprouting or root growth.

  7. Once the seeds have developed roots and sprouts, carefully transfer them to small pots or containers with soil.

  8. Continue to care for the seedlings by providing adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients.

  9. Monitor the growth of your kiwi plants and document their progress over time.

Fourth Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that kiwi fruits are native to China and are rich in Vitamin C?"

  • "Seeds are like tiny plant babies, waiting for the right conditions to grow and develop."

  • "When we provide warmth, moisture, and sunlight to seeds, it helps them germinate."

  • "The sprout that emerges from the seed is called the seedling, and it eventually grows into a full-sized plant."

  • "Just like humans, plants need water, sunlight, and nutrients to survive and thrive."

  • "By growing your own kiwi plants, you can learn about the life cycle of plants and enjoy the fruits of your labor."
