Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of physics through fun monster truck activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy monster trucks
  • Various objects (books, blocks, ramps, etc.)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Paper and pencil

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson. Just come with a curious mind and enthusiasm!

Activities

  1. Experimenting with Forces:

Set up a ramp using books or blocks. Place a toy monster truck at the top of the ramp and let it roll down. Observe how the truck moves and discuss the forces involved, such as gravity and friction. Try different surfaces and angles to see how they affect the truck's motion.

  2. Measuring Distance:

Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure how far the monster truck travels when rolled down the ramp. Record the distances in a table and compare the results for different surfaces and angles. Discuss how distance relates to speed and force.

  3. Designing Obstacle Course:

Create an obstacle course using objects like books, blocks, and other household items. Challenge yourself to navigate the monster truck through the course, considering factors like speed, balance, and momentum. Experiment with different designs and discuss the outcomes.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Physics is the branch of science that studies how objects move and interact with each other."
  • "Forces are pushes or pulls that can make objects move, stop, or change direction."
  • "Gravity is a force that pulls objects towards the center of the Earth. That's why things fall down instead of floating away."
  • "Friction is a force that happens when two things rub against each other. It can slow things down or make them stop."
  • "When we measure distance, we are finding out how far something travels."
  • "Speed is how fast something moves. The faster an object moves, the more force it needs to keep going."
  • "Momentum is a word we use to describe how hard it is to stop something that is moving. The bigger and faster something is, the more momentum it has."
