Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a narrative essay about cabins, using descriptive language and proper sentence structure.
Materials and Prep
- Pen/pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a good understanding of what a narrative essay is and how to write complete sentences.
Activities
- Brainstorming: Start by discussing cabins with your student. Ask them questions to get their imagination flowing. What do they think of when they hear the word "cabin"? What do they imagine a cabin looks like? What activities could someone do at a cabin? Encourage them to think of specific details.
- Planning: Once your student has some ideas, have them create a simple outline for their essay. They can use bullet points to jot down the main points they want to include in their narrative.
- Writing: Now it's time to write the essay! Remind your student to start with an engaging introduction, where they introduce the topic and grab the reader's attention. Then, they can use their outline to guide them through the body paragraphs, where they describe different aspects of cabins. Encourage them to use descriptive language to paint a vivid picture for the reader. Finally, they should wrap up their essay with a conclusion that summarizes their main points and leaves the reader with a lasting impression.
- Editing and Revising: After completing the first draft, go through the essay together and discuss any areas that could be improved. Help your student revise their sentences for clarity and add more descriptive details where needed.
- Final Draft: Once the essay has been revised, have your student write a final draft. Encourage them to write neatly and use proper punctuation and capitalization.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "A narrative essay is a type of writing where you tell a story. In this case, we will be writing a story about cabins."
- "When writing a narrative essay, it's important to use descriptive language to help the reader imagine what you're talking about. This means using words that describe how things look, sound, feel, taste, or smell."
- "We will start by brainstorming ideas about cabins. Think about what cabins look like, what people do at cabins, and any other details you can think of."
- "Next, we will create an outline to help organize our thoughts. This will be like a plan for our essay, with the main points we want to include."
- "Then, we will start writing our essay. Remember to start with an interesting introduction, describe different aspects of cabins in the body paragraphs, and end with a conclusion."
- "After we finish writing, we will go back and read our essay to see if there are any parts that can be improved. We will make changes to make our sentences clearer and add more descriptive details if needed."
- "Finally, we will write a final draft of our essay, making sure to write neatly and use proper punctuation and capitalization."
