Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to count numbers and apply that knowledge to reading activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Counting objects like blocks, buttons, or small toys
  • Number flashcards or a number chart
  • Reading books or stories with numbers mentioned
  • Paper and crayons for drawing

Activities

  1. Counting Objects: Start by counting different objects together. Use the counting objects you have, like blocks or buttons. Encourage your child to touch and count each object, saying the numbers out loud.
  2. Number Flashcards: Use number flashcards or a number chart to practice recognizing numbers. Show your child a flashcard or point to a number on the chart and ask them to say the number out loud. Repeat this activity with different numbers.
  3. Reading with Numbers: Choose a book or story that mentions numbers. Read the story together and pause whenever a number is mentioned. Ask your child to identify the number and count that many objects in the room. For example, if the story says "There were 3 bears," ask your child to count 3 objects in the room.
  4. Draw and Count: Give your child a piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a picture of something they like, such as a house, a tree, or an animal. Then, ask them to count and write down how many objects or elements they included in their drawing. Encourage them to say the numbers out loud as they count.
