Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to engage with a book by identifying pictures, listening to the story, and making simple connections.
Materials and Prep
- A picture book of the toddler's choice
- A comfortable reading area
Activities
- Introduce the book: Show the toddler the cover of the book and ask them to predict what the story might be about.
- Picture exploration: Go through the book and encourage the toddler to point out and name different objects or characters in the pictures. Ask questions like, "What color is the dog?" or "Can you find the ball?"
- Read aloud: Read the story to the toddler, using expressive voices and gestures to make it engaging. Pause occasionally to ask questions or make comments about the story.
- Story retelling: After reading, ask the toddler to retell the story in their own words. Encourage them to use the pictures as prompts.
- Make connections: Discuss any connections the toddler might have with the story. For example, if the story is about going to the park, ask if they have been to a park before and what they did there.
