Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to engage in reading a book independently and understand basic reading concepts.
Materials and Prep
- A picture book
- A comfortable reading area
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduce the book: Show the toddler the picture book and talk about the cover. Ask questions like "What do you think this book is about?" and "What do you see on the cover?"
- Read aloud: Sit with the toddler in the comfortable reading area and read the book aloud. Use expressive voices and engage the toddler by asking questions about the story or the pictures.
- Encourage participation: As you read, encourage the toddler to participate by pointing out familiar objects or characters, making predictions about what will happen next, or asking them to repeat simple phrases from the story.
- Let them explore: After reading, allow the toddler to explore the book independently. They can flip through the pages, look at the pictures, or attempt to "read" the story in their own words.
