Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basic principles of fire and combustion, and how they relate to fire fighting.
Materials and Prep
- Matches or a lighter
- A small metal container
- A candle
- A fire extinguisher (if available)
Make sure to have a safe and well-ventilated area for conducting the activities. Adult supervision is recommended.
Activities
- Introduction to Fire
- Fire Triangle
- Combustion Experiment
- Fire Extinguisher Demonstration
Start by discussing what fire is and how it is created. Show the student a lit candle and explain the concept of combustion.
Explain the three elements necessary for a fire to occur: fuel, oxygen, and heat. Discuss how fire fighters use this knowledge to control and extinguish fires.
Take the metal container and place a small amount of fuel in it, such as a piece of paper or a small piece of wood. Light the fuel using a match or lighter (with adult supervision) and observe the combustion process. Discuss the role of heat and oxygen in the reaction.
If available, demonstrate the use of a fire extinguisher and explain the different types and their functions. Discuss the importance of fire safety and the role of fire fighters in protecting lives and property.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Fire is a chemical reaction that produces heat, light, and flames."
- "Fire needs three things to burn: fuel, oxygen, and heat. These three things together are called the fire triangle."
- "Fire fighters are trained to control and extinguish fires by removing one or more elements of the fire triangle."
- "Fire extinguishers are tools that fire fighters use to put out fires. They contain special substances that can remove fuel, oxygen, or heat from the fire."
- "Fire fighters play a crucial role in protecting people, buildings, and the environment from the dangers of fire."
