Before the lesson, make sure to locate a good spot in your yard to hang the bird feeder.

2. Hang the bird feeder in the chosen spot in your yard.
3. Spend time observing the birds that visit the feeder and try to identify them using your field guide.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • Birds are animals that have feathers and can fly. They build nests to lay their eggs. You can say, "Birds are special animals because they can fly and build their own homes called nests."
  • Different birds have different colors and sizes. Some birds are small, like sparrows, and some are big, like eagles. You can say, "Just like people, birds come in different shapes, sizes, and colors."
  • Birds need food to survive. They eat seeds, insects, and sometimes even other small animals. You can say, "Birds need to eat just like we do. They like to eat seeds and bugs to stay healthy."
