Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Grade 5 homeschool student will be able to understand the basics of government and citizenship in the United States, with a focus on South Carolina.

Materials and Prep

  • Whiteboard or paper and markers
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Printouts of the South Carolina state flag and map

Prior to the lesson, familiarize yourself with the basic structure of the United States government and the specific features of South Carolina's government.

Activities

  1. Start by displaying the South Carolina state flag and map. Ask the student to identify the flag and locate South Carolina on the map. Discuss any interesting facts about the state.

  2. Introduce the concept of government and citizenship. Explain that government is a system that helps make and enforce laws, and citizenship refers to the rights and responsibilities of being a member of a community or country.

Ask the student to brainstorm examples of rules and laws they encounter in their daily life, such as traffic rules or school rules. Discuss why rules are important for a community to function smoothly.

  3. Explain the three branches of the United States government: legislative, executive, and judicial. Provide simple examples to help the student understand the roles and responsibilities of each branch.

For example, you could say: "The legislative branch makes laws. They are like the rule-makers. The executive branch enforces laws. They are like the rule-enforcers. The judicial branch interprets laws. They are like the rule-interpreters."

  4. Focus on South Carolina's government. Explain that South Carolina has its own state government in addition to the national government. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the governor, state legislature, and state courts.

Ask the student to research and find one interesting fact about the current governor of South Carolina. Have them share their findings with the class.
