Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science related to growing a garden and apply them to successfully grow your own garden.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds of your choice (vegetables, flowers, herbs, etc.)
  • Pots or containers for planting
  • Soil
  • Watering can or spray bottle
  • Sunlight
  • Access to a garden or outdoor space (optional)

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of the different types of soil, the importance of sunlight and water for plants, and how plants obtain nutrients.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Seed Selection - Research and choose the type of plants you want to grow in your garden. Consider factors such as climate, available space, and personal preferences.
  • Activity 2: Planting - Plant the seeds in pots or containers using the appropriate soil. Follow the instructions on the seed packets for planting depth and spacing.
  • Activity 3: Watering and Sunlight - Learn about the water requirements of your chosen plants and establish a watering schedule. Place the pots in an area that receives adequate sunlight for the plants to grow.
  • Activity 4: Observation and Care - Observe the growth of your plants regularly. Take note of any changes in appearance, height, or leaf color. Provide necessary care such as watering, pruning, and removing weeds.
  • Activity 5: Harvesting and Enjoying - Once your plants have matured, harvest the produce or enjoy the beauty of the flowers. Share your garden's bounty with family and friends.
