Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and perform basic addition with numbers up to 10.
Materials and Prep
- Counting objects (e.g., blocks, buttons, or toys)
- Pen or pencil
- Plain paper or a whiteboard
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Objects - Ask the student to count a set of objects and write down the total number.
- Activity 2: Addition with Objects - Using the same set of objects, ask the student to add more objects and count the new total.
- Activity 3: Number Line Addition - Draw a simple number line from 1 to 10 on a piece of paper or a whiteboard. Ask the student to start at a number and add a certain amount to find the new number.
- Activity 4: Addition with Fingers - Encourage the student to use their fingers to physically add numbers together. For example, ask them to show 2 fingers and then add 3 more fingers, and count the total.
Talking Points
- "Addition is a way to put numbers together to find the total."
- "When we add, we start with a number and add more to it."
- "Let's count these objects together and see how many there are in total."
- "Now, let's add more objects and count them all again."
- "Look at this number line. We can start at a number and jump forward to add more. Can you find the new number?"
- "Using our fingers can help us physically see and understand addition. Let's try adding numbers together using our fingers."
